Fury was down twice but battle for heavyweight title ends in controversial split

Fury looked finished when Wilder put him flat on his back with two minutes left in the fight, but he rose and made it to the bell. After which he celebrated on the ropes, but was denied on the judges’ scorecards, as the pair were split for the title. However, after the scoring it was realised that Wilder was given 115-111 on one card, Fury 114-112 on another and the final scorecard was 113-113.
Wilder (40-0-1, 39 KOs) headed into Saturday’s bout with an unbeaten pro record looking for his eighth consecutive defense of the WBC heavyweight title. Fury (27-0-1, 19 KOs), looked to win the WBC title for the first time after previously holding the WBA, IBF, and WBO belts – titles he vacated in April 2016 after an alleged anti-doping violation.
Following the fight, both heavyweights felt the split was not a true reflection of their performance.
“I think with the two knockdowns I definitely won the fight,” Wilder said. “We poured our hearts out tonight. We’re both warriors, but with those two drops I think I won the fight.
Meanwhile Fury said; “We’re on away soil, I got knocked down twice, but I still believe I won that fight. I’m being a total professional here. I went to Germany to fight Klitschko and I went to America to fight Deontay Wilder. God bless America. The Gypsy King has returned.”
Overall, the fight itself had some fireworks, it showcased a weird style clash that troubled both men at various points, and more or less lived up to the hype.
Both men thought they had done enough to win, but unlike their press conferences building the bout, there was no animosity shown by the two fighters in the ring when the fight was over
A rematch is on the cards as Wilder expressed;
“I would love for it to be my next fight. Why not? Let’s give the fans what they want to see. It was a a great fight and let’s do it again. It doesn’t matter to me where we do it.
“We’re the two best in the world and we proved it tonight. When you get two warriors you get a great fight. That’s what we proved tonight and I’m ready to do it again.”
