Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, and Tiger Woods for USA Ryder Cup
Tiger Woods was one of three golfers named as at-large picks to the U.S. Ryder Cup team by captain Jim Furyk on Tuesday. DeChambeau has won the last two FedEx Cup playoff events, rising to No. 7 in the world.
“I look forward to our players handling the situation well, [and] thrive on the challenge ahead of them,” Furyk said.
Tiger Woods will be returning to the Ryder Cup as a player for the first time in six years – His remarkable comeback will continue on.
Woods was already tabbed to participate in the event, but he said Tuesday that after having been named a vice-captain in February, he was deeply gratified by being able to play his way onto the squad.
“It’s incredible, it really is, to look back at the start of the year and now to have accomplished a goal like that,” Woods, 42, said (via the AP). “To be a part of this team, and now to be a player is just … beyond special.”
Phil Mickelson will set a Ryder Cup record by playing for the 12th straight time.
Mickelson will be making his 12th appearance, breaking a record he had shared with Faldo, and he has competed in every one since 1995. What the 48-year-old has yet to do is win on foreign soil, and he said Tuesday he was well aware this event might represent his final opportunity to get that triumph.
“This is mostly likely my last chance to go over to Europe and to be a part of a winning U.S. team in Europe. We haven’t done that in 25 years,” said Mickelson, who was 10th in the Ryder Cup standings.
Bryson DeChambeau, the hottest player in golf, completes the 3 of the American wild-card selections
Bryson Dechambeau has become virtually impossible to overlook after his back-to-back wins at the FedExCup playoffs.
Furthermore, DeChambeau’s two-stroke victory on Monday over Justin Rose at the Dell Technologies Championship was his third in his last nine starts, second in as many weeks and is more than contemporaries Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler have in all of 2018 combined.
Still to come for Furyk is his final captain’s pick, to be announced Monday after the BMW Championship.
The Ryder matches are Sept. 28-30 outside Paris.
