Maurizio Sarri believes Chelsea only need to add one more player before the transfer window closes
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri is still hoping to sign another midfielder before the transfer window closes, though does not expect to be busy on deadline day.
The Italian, who replaced Antonio Conte earlier this summer, has brought in just two new players – Jorginho and Rob Green – despite underlining the need for ‘a pinch of quality’ in midfield at his official unveiling several weeks ago.
As Sarri prepares for the Community Shield against Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday, Sarri said he does not feel his new club are short-handed, however, he is keen to bring in a player that offers something different to his current options.
Despite spending £52m on Jorginho, Sarri still wants one more midfielder.
“I talk with the club about the market but only one or maybe two times, not more. I spoke about positions and characteristics but no names,” Sarri told reporters.
“So, I don’t know. I think we need something, but maybe only a player.
“We have very good midfielders, but maybe a midfielder with different characteristics [would be a good fit].”
Chelsea spent £52million on Jorginho, who arrived the day before his former Napoli manager was finally unveiled at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have changed their head coach with great regularity in recent years but Sarri does not want his stay at Stamford Bridge to be a short one.
They also have a number of other options to choose from, with Cesc Fabregas and Ross Barkley impressing during pre-season, while N’Golo Kante returns to training at the start of next week following his World Cup exertions.
Sarri says he is yet to make up his mind about Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace, and the midfielder could push for another loan move abroad if he is not in the Italian’s plans.
