We’re into the tenth day of the 2019 French Open with the men’s quarter-finals set to start today.

Here is a preview of what to expect from today’s two mouthwatering matches with Kei Nishikori taking on 11-time champion Rafael Nadal while Stan Wawrinka up against compatriot Roger Federer.

Stan Wawrinka vs Roger Federer

Date: Tuesday 4th June 2019

Time: 14:00pm CET

Venue: Court Suzanne-Lenglen

The two players are widely considered as the best tennis players Switzerland has produced with the two going head to head in the Court Suzanne-Lenglen quarter-final.

Federer and Wawrinka have played each other twenty-five times so far in their careers with Roger significantly ahead in terms of wins having lost just three against Stan.

When it comes to clay, however, their rivalry has been much more even with Wawrinka winning three out of the seven matches they played while Federer won the other four.

This year, Wawrinka has had some tough matches on dirt with a long three-set win against Dimitrov in the third round with all sets decided in tie-breaks as well as a five-setter against Greek prodigy Tsitsipas in the round of 16. In the two matches, the Swiss had some very strong showings and he will need to confirm his form when he meets a player of the calibre of Federer.

Federer, on the other hand, has had a relatively ‘easier’ route on his way to the quarter-finals with all his matches in the tournament being won in straight sets so far. However, the sudden rise in quality of the opponent may disorient the Swiss maestro and possibly risk losing the match. Nevertheless, statistics are on Federer’s side with him managing to break his opponents a whopping 18 times so far while being broken only twice himself.

Federer will probably want to close off the match as soon as possible but given Stan’s playing style, the longer the match goes the higher the possibility for him to advance to the next round. Nevertheless, we think that Federer will get the best out of his compatriot and advance to the semi-finals just the same.

Kei Nishikori vs Rafael Nadal

Date: Tuesday 4th June 2019

Time: 15:15 pm CET

Venue: Court Philippe-Chatrier

In the other semi-final for Day 10, the number one Asian player Kei Nishikori will take on absolute favourite and 11-time champion Rafael Nadal on Court Philippe-Chatrier with the provisional start time being at 15:15pm CET.

Out of their twelve encounters in the past, Nishikori only managed to win two with the victories for the Japanese coming in their last five fixtures. Nadal won the remaining ten to dominate the head-to-head record he has with the number seven on the ATP rankings.

However, their head-to-head doesn’t really actually reflect the chances for the two players in this match given the unpredictability in today’s modern game. Having said that, beating Nadal on clay will be a mountain to climb for any player and that is why it will be tough for the Japanese to take something from this quarter-final clash.

Up till now, Nishikori has not been at his best with his two previous matches having been won struggling after being on the brink of defeat against Benoit Paire and Laslo Djere.

Nadal, on the other hand, seems unstoppable so far at the French Open with his only set lost up till now coming in the round of 32 fixture against Belgian David Goffin. Nadal won the Rome Masters after beating Djokovic before the start of the French Open this year.

So, without any disrespect to the Japanese’s talent and versatility, it can be safely said that it is Nadal who goes into this quarter-final clash as the overwhelming favourite.
