STAGE 5 ROUTE : BIRKENHEAD – BIRKENHEAD
Length: 174.1 km
Start-time: 11:15 BST
Expected finish: 15:25 BST
The 5th stage of the Tour of Britain is an out and-back race in Birkenhead. The riders race two southern loops – one big, one small – before Flaybrick Hill should pep up the finale.
Riders will pass through the historic Port Sunlight and into Cheshire West and Chester, notably passing the Airbus UK manufacturing facility at Broughton. The route will return to Wirral via Heswall, Caldy and Hoylake, before passing through the Birkenhead Park finish line and taking in a loop through Seacombe, Wallasey and New Brighton.
The final loop at kilometre 170 is a short ascent, but as it is placed inside the last 4 kilometres it could turn out to be a decisive factor.
Flaybrick Hill is positioned near the finish line, so the climb is perfect to launch a late attack. Possibly, the teams with a puncher in their ranks will want to control the race, so that he can go for glory in the finale.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprints (at kilometre 117.2, at kilometre 130.1, and at kilometre 144) come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
