Guardiola confident about their chances saying that ‘Manchester City won’t give up’
After losing to Newcastle, Pep Guardiola immediately turned his attention to Arsenal. The defending champions were given no time to mope as they have work to do.
Pep Guardiola shared that Man City players would go straight back to training to put right some shortcomings that have crept into their game. Even though, Guardiola regarded his team’s performance at St. James’ Park as an ‘off night’ he also claimed to know exactly why it all went wrong.
“We didn’t commit the holding midfielders or attacking midfielders from Newcastle with enough aggression,” he said. “That was the main reason. You pass the ball but with the intention to attack them and to try to make movements inside and outside and be aggressive in those positions, and we didn’t do that.”
Manchester City are now in a tricky spot as far as their title hopes are concerned, but Guardiola is adamant that his team will fight till the very end.
Manchester City have been in harder positions before – such as in 2012. City were able to claim the title after sitting eight points behind United with six games to play, while Manuel Pellegrini’s Blues were nine points off top spot with just five matches left in 2014. Therefore, one ‘off-night’ is no reason to think the worst for Manchester City.
Manchester City will have to actively fight for their victory on Sunday and avoid the passive nature they showed in their four defeats this season. Their downfall, as Guardiola touched upon has been handing all initiative and control to opposing teams.
Chelsea (2), Crystal Palace (3), Leicester (2) and Newcastle (2) have all significantly scored more than they were expected to in these games (0.53, 1.27, 1.56, and 0.96 respectively).
It may also be a tactical issue as ever since City started smashing teams for sixes and sevens, the challenge of overcoming deep-lying defences has been regular and Wolves and Wigan were among the teams last season to show that off-nights can occur.
Manchester City will have to be in their best form against Arsenal if they want to take the title this year.
