Marouane Fellaini blasts Jamie Carragher over harsh criticism
Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini has re-ignited an old feud with former Liverpool defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher. The latter was suspended from his duties by Sky Sports after footage of him spitting at a young girl surfaced online.
Fellaini, who last Sunday helped United secure a Champions League spot thanks to a last-gasp winner against Arsenal was speaking with Belgian magazine Sport/Foot.
During the sit-down, Fella, who is well known for his robust and no-nonsense style of play was questioned is harsh analysis from pundits and fans gets to him.
“How can someone like Jamie Carragher dare to question me?” replied Fellaini
“The guy spat from his car on a girl after a Manchester-Liverpool match,” .
The former Everton player added that criticism motivates him to play even better.
“You know, critics help you progress, you end up working more, you want to show them they are wrong.”
The 30-year-old was more forgiving when it came to the Reds fans.
“It’s happened once. Everyone exaggerates when it comes to this. It was against Tottenham when I came on, a week after I gave away a penalty against Everton.
“In the end, I know one thing and the fans do too — I’ve played an important role in all the trophies the club has won in recent years.”
What’s next for Fellaini?
Fellaini who joined Manchester United in the summer of 2013 will be out of contract at the end of this season. Back in September, United offered him a contract extension which he rejected. However, earlier this year Mourinho confirmed that the player and the club are close to agreeing to a new deal.
Nonetheless, when asked about his future, Fellaini refused to commit to the Red Devils.
“I am now 30 years old, at the end of my contract and negotiating with Manchester United,” he added.
“There are several clubs showing interest. I’m waiting for what’s going to happen.”
Since joining United from Everton, Fellaini has made over 100 club appearances. The afro-haired midfielder was part of the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League winning team and the 2015-16 FA Cup winning team. He also won 2016-17 League cup.
Marouane Fellaini is expected to be part of Roberto Martínez’ team that will compete in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
