A video clip surfaced on Thursday morning of the alleged sex abuse
Police are considering opening an investigation into four footballers after a sexual video was shared on WhatsApp early yesterday. Apparently in the video, the footballers committed various indecent acts on an unconscious woman while they sang, laughed and humiliated her. Hebrew media later revealed that one of the four men is French-Israeli footballer Gaetan Antony Varenne who plays for Israeli Premier League club Beitar Jerusalem. The other players play with other clubs in the lower tiers of Israel. Moreover, the video is reported to be taken years ago before Varenne even played for Beitar.
After the case broke out, several entities left their view on the incident. The Israel Football Association left a statement where it said that it won’t summon Varenne for a disciplinary hearing. Nonetheless, it expected that footballers should behave properly and with respect. According to Israel Radio, police will look into the video as they mull whether they should open an investigation.
Hadashot news reported Varenne saying: “I screwed up. It happened once and will never happen again. I’ll have to live with the shame all my life. Whoever knows me knows it’s not what I’m like”.
Walla news site also stated that Varenne told those close to him that people tried to blackmail him over the video. Also, he didn’t exclude the possibility that more videos may come out.
Beitar Jerusalem will play tomorrow against Maccabi Netanya in the play-offs for the championship. Despite the episode, manager Benny Ben Zaken expects Varenne to play. This brought strong opposing and condemning from Michal Rozin who represents the Meretz Party. On Facebook, she concluded:
“…the team didn’t voice any proper condemnation, but announced that he [Varenne] will play on Saturday. So let’s help them with their dithering. The proper thing to do is to sack Varenne while publicly condemning this deviant act. Anything else gives a green light to violence against women.”
