A double for Griezmann seals the Europa League title for Atletico Madrid
Man of the Match – Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid)
Antoine Griezmann clinches the Europa League title for Atletico Madrid as he scored two goals in the final with a 3-0 victory over Marseille on Wednesday night.
The French forward managed to take advantage of an early mistake by Marseille’s Mandanda to fire the Atletis into an early lead.
To make matters worse, Dimitri Payet was forced off the pitch with a right hamstring injury just after the half-hour mark leaving the French side without its playmaker and captain. With the World Cup just around the corner, Payet has bigger concerns as his injury might prevent him from being called up by Didier Deschamps on Thursday.
Griezmann wasn’t done as he doubled the lead in the 49th minute with an assist from Koke where he managed to dink the ball over the onrushing Marseille keeper.
Marseille were seen to be more confident in the final minutes of the match as they kept better control over the ball and managed to fire a few more shots in to challenge Atletico Madrid’s keeper, Jan Oblak.
Unfortunately for the French side, they didn’t manage to find the back of the net. Instead, the closest effort on goal was Kostas Mitroglou’s header which hit the left post denying Marseille a possible comeback.
Atletico’s captain Gabi sealed it all up with a late strike in the bottom corner in the final 10 minutes of the match to make it three.
With Diego Simeone in the stands serving a four-match ban for being sent off in the semi-final against Arsenal, Atletico reacted to Marseille’s early attacks and produced a performance which has become a trademark under the Argentine.
Griezmann’s double was enough to lead Atletico to a third Europa League trophy. Griezmann is heavily linked with a transfer to the Nou Camp after the World Cup but the Atleti’s will surely do whatever it takes to keep him for another season.
