Kalidou Koulibaly’s last-minute header sealed a victory for Napoli
Kalidou Koulibaly scored a last-minute header last night, giving Napoli a famous victory. Napoli dominated the match, but it was only until the last minute that the hope for the title was kept alive. His towering header gave them a 1-0 win over Juventus, and a step closer to the Serie A title.
It was Jose Callejon’s corner shot which initiated the last minute goal. Koulibaly headed the winner off the corner and gave Napoli their first ever victory at Allianz Stadium.
Napoli deserved their victory. Juventus never looked comfortable during the match. Part of that was down to Giorgio Chiellini’s injury after only a minute. Juventus lost their best defender and one of their leaders. The sudden nature of the injury meant that no-one was warmed up or ready to replace him. Chiellini grit his teeth and tried to play on but as the veteran suffered, so did his team.
Napoli are not champions yet. Incredibly though, for a team that found themselves nine points behind Juventus at one point on Wednesday, they just might become the end of the season.
“We believe in ourselves, in our style of football, in our players and our staff. We proved that tonight,” Koulibaly said.
Moreover, the six-time defending champions Juventus’ lead at the top of the table has been cut to just one point with four games left. Juventus have a difficult run-in to the season against Inter Milan and Roma, as both teams are fighting for Champions League places.
The Senegalese defender Koulibaly spoke highly of his team and their performance. He said;
“We knew it was a very difficult and important match, but we did everything to win, we did it and can be proud of ourselves”
“Juve are a very strong side, but we proved Napoli can fight it out with them. The team has always believed in the Scudetto and will do until it’s mathematically certain,” added Koulibaly.
The defender also took the time to show gratitude to their fans, expressing that they appreciate the support. Koulibaly said;
“The city fired us up over the last few days and when we see all those fans accompanying us to the airport, it makes us very happy. We want to thank them and the best way of doing that was to win the game.”
