The semi-finals kick off today
Teams that reached the semi-finals
France (2-0 winners against Uruguay)
Belgium (2-1 winners against Brazil)
Croatia (winners on penalties against Russia after a 2-2 draw)
England (2-0 winners against Sweden)
Tensions are heightened as the semi-finals are about to kick off. France face Belgium while England play Croatia. The Lions return to the semi-finals for the first time since their loss to Germany in 1990, and this year, England eased through to the semis with a comfortable 2-0 win. But, first up France face Belgium for a place in the final.
France vs Belgium
Match date and time: 10th July 2018 – 20:00
Today, neighbours Belgium and France go head to head for their chance to get a spot in the final – which will be their 75th encounter. Most of the time it’s been friendly, sometimes fun but when it has mattered most, at two World Cups and Euro ’84, it has only ever gone one way. Didier Deschamps will be hoping to extend the winning French run this evening.
France’s semi-final against Belgium in St.Petersburg tonight has the makings of a World Cup classic. France are set to present a challenge, while Belgium are also proving to be a threat. Nonetheless, the French will start as favourites even if the tone of their goalkeeper might suggest otherwise.
“When it comes to possession,” says Hugo Lloris, “they can beat you with three passes going forward; three piercing passes, that’s what they did to Brazil. They will ask a lot of questions of us and the answers will have to be collective answers. They will be confident. We will have to stick together.”
Croatia vs England
Match date and time: 11th July 2018 – 20:00
It’s been an unexpected turn for England as it was expected the Brits would make their way home after the quarter-finals, but it was a beautiful draw that saved England from going home. England will have a slight advantage over Croatia having rested. On the other hand, the Croatian players will still be recovering from their gruelling match against the Russians. It’s the first time the Three Lions have reached this stage of the World Cup since Italia ’90 where they were knocked out against West Germany on penalties. With the likes of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic, Croatia will surely provide England’s toughest test in the competition so far. Bu, who is making it through to the final?
