The Police are now involved
Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius has received abuse and death threats on social media following his nightmare performance in the Champions League Final. His two mistakes helped Real Madrid win 3-1 over the Reds in Kiev.
Karius has apologised to his fans and teammates, but some fans remain angered by the situation. The severity of it escalated when he personally received death threats targeting himself as well as his family.
Some fans posted vile messages on Twitter calling the German-born Karius a “Nazi” and others wishing him dead.
One poster wrote: “My Liverpool boys fought hard and I’m proud of them. Except for Karius he can die in a hole.”
Some comments wished death on the Karius’ family. One tweeted: “I hope your whole fucking family dies” and “get out of the fucking club your a waste of oxygen”.
Another soulless troll wrote: “Your fucking sons deserve to die of cancer.”
Fans who support Karius were furious that the messages had been posted. One person wrote ;
“The people who are tweeting Loris Karius saying they hope he dies are not Liverpool fans; they’re disgusting human beings.”
Merseyside Police have now stepped in to alleviate the situation.
“We take social media posts of this nature extremely seriously. Offences will be investigated,” police said.
“Officers are aware of a number of comments and threats made via social media.
“Merseyside Police would like to remind social media users than any offences including malicious communications and threatening behaviour will be investigated.”
Despite the death threats, Karius issued a heartfelt apology to fans on Twitter on Sunday evening.
He wrote: “Haven’t really slept until now… the scenes are still running through my head again and again… I’m infinitely sorry to my teammates, for you fans, and for all the staff.
“I know that I messed it up with the two mistakes and let you all down.”
