Jurgen Klopp rebuffs claims about Virgil Van Dijk’s weight
On Sunday afternoon, Liverpool face Tottenham at Anfield. During the pre-match press-conference, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp faced various questions about the Huddersfield win, Tottenham’s impressive win over United, transfers and also Virgil Van Dijk. One particular journalist asked about Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher’s claims that the club’s record-breaking signing is ‘too big’.
“I think it will prove to be a great signing, but he hasn’t hit the ground running,” Carragher said prior to today’s press-conference.
“I think he needs to get fit and lose a bit of weight. He actually looks too big. Maybe that’s to do with not having a pre-season.”
Immediately, the German manager rebuffed this claim with a subtle dig towards Carragher.
“I’m sure that Jamie needs to lose a bit of weight. It’s not an issue.
“When Virgil came here he wasn’t match fit. I spoke to him about it (leaving him out the other night), he expected it. We have to use the time.”
Jurgen Klopp can take Liverpool five points above fifth placed Tottenham if they win on Sunday. After this week’s games, Liverpool jumped in third place on equal points with Chelsea but with a better goal difference. Moreover, the Reds are only three points away from second placed team Manchester United.
