An unbeatable record may be broken on Saturday
The Liverpool legend Ian Rush has insisted that if Mohamed Salah breaks his record for ‘goals scored in a single season’ for Merseyside, he will actually ‘bow down’ to the Egyptian. In order for that to happen Salah will need to score more than four goals against Real Madrid on Saturday.
Rush’s record is 47 goals, which he had helped to secure the Anfield Club a European Cup win over 30 years ago. The record was broken in Rome, will the next one be in Kiev, Ukraine?
Rush has said he wouldn’t be surprised if he does.
“For someone to score 47 goals would be an amazing feat and he is capable of doing it if we can get a good run in the Champions League – when I scored 47 goals we won the European Cup so it does need that little bit longer,” he said in March.
Salah has enjoyed a trailblazing season in Merseyside, scoring 44 goals in all competitions, while racing away with the Golden Boot in the Premier League.
For the incisive winger to equal the Welshman’s record, Salah would have to score a hat-trick against the current Champions League winners – an unlikely feat, but given his explosive debut season for Liverpool, not entirely out of the question.
Rush has revealed that he will “bow down” to Salah if he scores four, but only on the proviso that Liverpool also wins the match as well.
Rush told the Daily Mail: “I didn’t realise until two months ago that I had the record! I knew I’d scored 47 but I thought someone like Roger Hunt had scored 50.
“Of course you want to keep records, but they’re there to be broken. And when I did score 47, we won three trophies. If you score 47 and don’t win anything, individually it’s a great season but Mo is really humble and he’d swap all of them for the team to win something.
“Put it this way, if he beats mine, I’ll bow down to him myself,’ says Rush. ‘As long as they win! 5-4 to Real Madrid is no good!”
