Buffon aged 39, will retire at the end of the season

At the moment, David De Gea is considered as the best goalkeeper in the world. His heroics for Manchester United earned him this status. But despite his most recent man-of-the-match game against Arsenal, former Red Devils goalkeeper Mark Bosnich stated that Buffon is still better than De Gea.

While talking to Talksport, Bosnich said:

“I think De Gea would definitely be in the top-three.

“He was absolutely outstanding against Arsenal. Making 14 saves – it was a really great performance from David de Gea and if you’re going to win a title you need a goalkeeper who is going to save 20 or 25 points a season. There is no team who has won a title without a great goalkeeper between the sticks.”

After the first statement, the former Australia number one turned on the legendary Gigi Buffon. Despite his age (39), Bosnich will go for Buffon over De Gea.

“But, you’ve got to think of Gigi Buffon, regardless of his age. He came in fourth place for the FIFA Best Player awards this year and was awarded the Best Goalkeeper award.

“I know we don’t see him play as much as Premier League goalkeepers, but I’d still have Buffon ahead of De Gea as number one.”

Bosnich’s opinion may be short-lived as Buffon has plans to retire at the end of the season. His retirement comes with some disappointment as Buffon will miss the World Cup after Italy’s elimination in the play-offs.
