The test showed diuretic hydrochlorothiazide in the player’s system
Brazilian player Joao Pedro will spend his birthday today in the worst possible way! This comes after news reports today stated that he faces a long ban from football after testing positive for a banned substance. Instantly, the Italian national anti-doping court suspended the forward until further notice. According to ANSA, the substance diuretic hydrochlorothiazide was found in Joao Pedro’s system after the game against Sassuolo. Cagliari played this game on February the 11th and it ended in a goalless draw. Additionally, the player played the whole 90 minutes.
Joao Pedro joined Cagliari in 2014. Since then he played over a 100 games and scored 30 goals. Early this season, he signed a new contract with the Sardinian club. Also this season, the Brazilian forward picked up a four-match ban for simulation and stamping Federico Chiesa.
Furthermore, this wasn’t the first case of doping in the Serie A this season. Besides Joao Pedro, Benevento captain Fabio Lucioni also failed another doping test. In Lucioni’s case, the Benevento doctor received a four-year ban while the player received a one-year ban. Allegedly, Lucioni said that he trusted the doctor’s advice in his case and should have a reduced culpability.
