Davide Astori also played with Roma, Cagliari and Milan
Tragic news this morning as Fiorentina captain Davide Astori has been found dead at the team’s hotel La di Moret in Udine. According to various reports, Astori, 31, died in his sleep just hours before the Viola were about to play against Udinese. The defender was currently with his team-mates preparing for the game.
Astori formed part of the Italian national team. In fact he played 14 times with the Azzurri.
A statement by his club Fiorentina read:
“Fiorentina are profoundly shaken and forced to announce that their captain Davide Astori has died. For this terrible and delicate situation, and above all out of respect for his family, we appeal to the sensitivity of the media.”
In light of this tragic news, the game at the Stadio Friuli was called off as a mark of respect. It is also a possibility that the rest of the Serie A fixtures will be also called off. The early kick-off between Genoa and Cagliari was postponed. As soon as the crowd that gathered for the game heard the news and saw a photo of Astori, it broke out in a round of applause.
