The star is charged with false testimony
What a season this is turning out to be for Real Madrid! They entered the season as firm favourites for all honours but stuttered in the Spanish League and domestic cup. Luckily they are in a good chance to advance to another stage in the Champions League! In a few words it’s been a hell of a roller-coaster. Apparently, Real Madrid star Luka Modric will have more drama to witness this year. Yesterday, the general attorney in Croatia accused him of perjury during a trial.
Osijek’s attorney’s office stated that it has charged Modric with giving false testimony in a criminal trial. Although the statement did not refer to Modric by name, a standard practice in Croatia, it said that it had charged a 32-year-old Croatia citizen and also mentioned details from his testimony. Furthermore, the majority of the Croatian media reported that it was the Real Madrid star who has been charged. Overall, if found guilty he may face up to five years in prison if found guilty.
Around a year ago, Modric testified at a trial of a tax official and some former senior officials of Dinamo Zagreb. During the case, the authorities investigated the dates of signing the annexes of professional contracts which regulated transfer fees. Also, the attorney charged the officials for avoiding to pay the equivalent of £1.8million in taxes and diverted £13.9million from the club. Allegedly, Modric gave a false testimony as he appeared as witness. So now, the attorney’s office took steps against Modric for conditioning the trial in the end. Also involved in this case as witness was Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren. The defender was also accused of perjury some months ago.
Croatia captain Modric formed part of Dinamo Zagreb prior to his move to Tottenham in 2008. Four years later, he joined Real Madrid where he is still paying.
